Happy Birthday America!

Celebrating the 4th of July this year held some firsts for Wynn – his first parade and first fireworks!

We were in Iowa for the 4th and spent a few days in Storm Lake, which is a fun place to enjoy America’s birthday! The community really comes together to make it a great celebration. We started out the celebrations with splashing around at the water park with our friends Rob, Erin and Beckham. Then we watched the kiddie parade and had dinner on Main Street. Wynn was in rare form at dinner and couldn't sit still, so Grandpa Tony took him on a walk so the rest of us could finish our dinner in peace! Wynn found a little hula girl in one of the store front windows and had fun practicing his hula moves too!

The next day we made sure to get our lawn chairs set in a prime spot for parade watching! Wynn had a blast watching and waving to the endless procession of cars, trucks and tractors. He also loved when the marching band went by and started dancing to the music! His other favorite activity was running away and having Uncle Christian catch him! Wynn wasn’t too into grabbing the thrown candy yet, but I’m pretty sure he snuck at least one tootsie roll.

A few days later we trekked out to the cabin to watch a fireworks show put on by my Uncle Jim and Aunt Jean in honor of Corbin! It was a fun day at the lake full of family, swimming, boat rides and yummy food. By the time the evening rolled around we were all anxious for the fireworks to start, but had to wait for the long summer day to be over and it was dark!

Wynn helped fill the time by putting on the Minnesota Rouser for everyone. That kid is much too smart for his own good – he knows exactly where in the garage the stereo is kept and how to open the little door on the front of it to access the iPod! He gets SO excited each time it comes on! We’re going to have to get it on video soon, he’s so cute clapping, dancing and chanting to the song! The only problem is once we start playing it, he wants to hear it again, and again, and again . . .

Once it was really dark, Uncle Jim and his fireworks assistant, Bjorn, headed out to the end of the point with their wheelbarrows full of fireworks. They went all out with some spectacular fireworks and got fancy by coordinating multiple ones at a time. Wynn was SO curious about the fireworks – he just stared at the sky in wonder! However, he wasn’t scared of them and for days after  he kept saying “boom!” and putting his hands up in the air, so we know they made quite the impression on him!

As soon as the fireworks ended, it started pouring! Something tells me there was a very special little boy in heaven who loved watching along with us and helped keep us dry! We love you Corbin and miss you every day.
