The Pizza Incident

One thing I forgot to mention in the post about my Grandpa was the 'pizza incident.'  It's a memory I don't want to forget!

My Grandpa's wake was on a Sunday evening and after being there for a few hours, we decided to take the kids back to my grandparents house as they were starting to get a little restless. When we got there we decided to put a lasagna and some frozen pizzas in the oven so dinner would be ready when everyone else got back.

The frozen pizzas that happened to be there were from Papa Murphy's. Not thinking much about it, we cooked them right on the rack instead of on the paper pan they came with. Most frozen pizzas get nice and crispy this way, right?! I have to mention here that we couldn't find the overhead light switch for the kitchen at this point too, so it was pretty dark in there. The switch that seemed like the obvious one didn't do anything when we flipped it on.

Well about a half hour later we started smelling something burning and we walked into a pretty smokey kitchen! When we opened the door to the oven, one of the pizzas was literally  melting right through the spaces in the rack. It was an ooey, gooey mess! In the dark we could hardly see what we were doing as we tried to pry it off the rack without ruining the second pizza in the rack underneath it. Right at that moment the light switched on!! I'm sure there is some way to explain it, but I like to think it was my Grandpa looking out for us.

Up until this point it had only been my sister and I in the kitchen, but of course our husbands came it to see what was going on and we didn't hear the end of it with their teasing! We tried to salvage the poor pizza, but it was cooked in some places, and either soggy or burnt in others. We were all laughing so hard and came to the conclusion that we should just go and buy a pizza from a local restaurant!

The laughter felt so good and provided a bit of levity on an otherwise hard and sad day. There was another incident later that night with my cousin Lara getting shocked every time she touched the door to go into my grandparents house, which provided even more comic relief. Thank you Grandpa for helping us to remember to smile and watching out for us always.
